The path has cafes, shops, toilets and restaurants all along the side of it so why not stop and have lunch then buy some souvenirs after you have been up and seen the dunes? This place is definitely worth a visit, but it is a long walk up the side of the dune to get to the top; good thing there has been some steps built up against the dune.
At over 100m it's the highest sand dune in Europe – a veritable mountain of wind-carved sand which is about 12km south of Arcachon. Buses also drive off to and from the dune every hour in July and August. There loads of stands selling ice cream and souvenirs at the bottom of the dune. There is also cafes, restaurants and there is a toilet block there too. From the top of the dune you get a superb view over the bay of Arcachon and the forest of the Landes stretching away to the south. It's a great sandy slide down to the sea but a very long hard haul back up but its well worth the effort!
