Aquitaine - About the Region
On the front of the Atlantic Ocean, in the southwest of France,
Aquitaine has lots to offer. From charming food and wine to long
sandy beaches. Aquitaine is also home of Dune du Pyla, the
largest sand dune in Europe! In the past few years this giant
sand dune has swallowed up trees, a road junction and an entire
hotel. Alongside this, the beautiful forests and scenery will
amaze you.
Aquitaine, in the south-west of France, has a long sandy
coastline which stretches 200km from the mouth of the Gironde
estuary down to Spanish border. To the north are grand villas,
resorts, forests and beautiful endless white sandy beaches all
along the coast.
Not only that - large natural wonders, such as the Dune du Pyla
(shown in the picture above), will amaze you. Dune du Pyla is
the largest sand dunes in Europe and in the past few years it
has swallowed up trees, a road junction and an entire hotel!
Surrounding the dunes are large forests full of pine trees
growing out of the sandy floor. There is a road leading up to
the dunes which has a large car park at the end of it; once
you've parked you need to take a short walk down a wide path
which leads to the bottom of the dunes. The path has cafes,
shops, toilets and restaurants all along the side of it so why
not stop and have lunch then buy some souvenirs after you have
been up and seen the dunes? This place is definitely worth a
visit, but it is a long walk up the side of the dune to get to
the top; good thing there has been some steps built up against
the dune.
Aquitaine's has long sandy beaches, sand dunes and a large
expanse of pine forests that make up most of the coast. These
forests were planted in the 19th century to stabilise drifting
sands; such as the sand creating Dune du Pyla.
The towns of Aquitaine are beautifully decorated with many
restaurants, shops and cafes. The lively buzzing town life of
this French region is fun to be amongst.
