Paris - About the Region

Paris, the capital of France, is a lively town full of relaxing cafés and has some of the best restaurants and hotels in Europe, and even the world. As well as a booming fashion industry Paris offers some of the most well known and most amazing attractions such as the Eiffel Tower and the Arc de Triomphe.

Paris stimulates the senses. Demanding to be seen, heard, touched, tasted and smelt. The romantic French cafes and restaurants are buzzing with people. Food from all around the world is served, but the things that stand out are the traditional French delicacy's such as seafood, frogs legs and snails - things not served in many other places around the world; traditional French dishes. Cheeses and chocolate give you an idea of Paris, such sweet romantic attractions alongside strange but somehow amazing dishes of French tradition.

You will gaze at the impressive monuments, works of art and magic lights all throughout Paris; including the Eiffel Tower, Arc de Triomphe, Paris Opera House, Louvre Museum, Notre-Dame Cathedral and the Orsay Museum.

The Eiffel Tower is one of the most well known landmarks in the world, it invites loads of tourists from all over the world. Paris wouldn't quite be the same without it.

The Eiffel Tower was built for the International Exhibition of Paris of 1889 commemorating the centenary of the French Revolution. There were originally 700 proposals submitted in a design competition but Gustave Eiffel's was unanimously chosen and made - this is where the name was from. The tower now stands at 300 metres, 320.75m including antenna, and weighs an enormous 7000 tons - it was also the world's tallest building until 1930. The tower was built with 15,000 iron pieces and 2.5 million rivets which took 300 steel workers 2 years (1887-1889) to construct it! It can sway almost 12 cm in high winds and the height varies up to 15 cm depending on temperature! There are 1652 steps to the top so its a long haul up - you should take the elevators.
